Day 3: My First Love

With out a doubt, with no question in my mind, my first love was MAKE BELIEVE PLAY! It wasn’t a boy, favorite doll, food or any other extra curricular activity. I could, and usually would, spend hours dreaming up characters, plots, games and fantasy stories till my pretend cows came home! Now, I just didn’t walk around talking to myself with a far away look in my eyes. These fantastic fairy tales usually involved my neighborhood friends, my brother, and my huge chests full of dress up clothes and props. We played everything from red wagon Nascar races and pioneers in covered wagons to pretty pretty princesses and of course the all time favorite: house. There was nothing I loved more than a good game of pretend. Sometimes we would have to call a time-out and start back up the next day because one day just wasn’t enough to finish our story that we had created with our very imaginative imaginations!
Just off the top of my head I can think of one time when my brother and I and about 10 of the neighbor kids put on at least 5 weddings in the backyard. And it was all very romantic once us girls got all the boys cleaned up and taking their proposals seriously! I’m almost positive we destroyed my mom’s rose bushes for our aisle confetti!
On one rainy day while my mother was napping, my brother and I decided to build a fort in my room. We got a little carried away and turned the ENTIRE, and I mean ENTIRE house into one massive blanket fort. IT WAS AWESOME! we had tunnels, traps, secret passage ways and lil’ nooks to stash the snackage. Because mom is so awesome, she let us keep it up all day and even crawled around in it with us!
There is something special about make believe play; as a child you call the shots, and if you don’t like them, you change them. You want a blue horse and a two story castle? You got em’. Feeling a little frilly? You are now the most beautiful warrior princess in the land, ready to kick butt and still keep your tiara on straight!
Yes, this was my first love. And Although I now have new loves that have taken their place up front, pretend play, my chests full of dress-ups and my head full of fantasy will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart.
